Am I a unicorn?

After six months of sending resumes to every media outlet within a 60-mile radius of Fort Campbell, I joined the Kentucky New Era as a staff writer in September 2013. The local daily served a city of 35,000 and a tri-county area of about 125,000 people. Like all entry-level reporter positions it paid peanuts, but it was exactly what I always dreamed of doing. I love news and struggled with leaving once orders dropped.

Three years later, I’m still struggling to find a media outlet that will take me. I get that I chose a profession with pre-existing struggles and dumped a whole other set of obstacles on top of it.

And don’t get me wrong, PCS Life is hard for everyone, but it wasn’t until we moved for the second time that I realized how difficult it would be to continue pursing reporting. Journalism was always the plan before the Army, and it’s hard to accept doing anything else.

At NAS Pensacola I spent the first four months after the move counting down the days, weeks and months until our future move to journalism mecca. I just had to hold on for three more months and we’d be in the D.C. area for good.

Or so I thought. Paperwork sat on a desk, and seven months turned to a year. I took a job through a temp agency at a local radio station so I didn’t murder my husband for self-fulfillment.

Packing up every two to three years, setting up a new house and maintaining a career through it all can seem impossible when you first start the military life journey. You go to school with one plan in mind and then life turns around and craps all over it. Good prep for military life I guess?

Well, sometimes it seems impossible. Disheartening. Defeating.

That’s why being surrounded by military spouses of all professions and backgrounds Monday afternoon was so uplifting. Co-hosted by Starbucks, the first meeting of In Gear Career’s National Capital Region chapter kicked off over free coffee and cake.

IGC is a networking group for professional military spouses in pursuit of career advancement, not just a job. I first found the group at Fort Campbell when I wondered, “Could there be other spouses established in their careers and unwilling to let them go?”

Surrounded by about 20 other resilient, hard-working, eager spouses the answer was clear to me.

Yes, we’re here.

i’m in!

nyc marathon I can’t say there’s a better sight than this acceptance confirmation right now. After four lottery attempts and more years of running I’m finally going to run the NYC Marathon this year. I’m still in shock, caught somewhere between excitement, fear and OhEmGee what in the world (WTF) did I just do? Is anyone else in? I think this is just the push I need to get back to more running and posting about it. I always do better with a plan. Speaking of plans, this is the one I’ve made up for the Nashville Country Music Half Marathon. NashvilleCountryMusicHalf2015 I’m running it this year as a RockNBlog Ambassador. Last year was my first, and until this point, my only RocknRoll race. I had so much fun and I can’t imagine this year will be any different. Also on the horizon is RocknRoll Vegas (what!) in November and maybe St. Louis or Chicago. Woohoo! So excited for a full 2015. So are you doing NYC this year? How about any RocknRoll races? Do you have any tips for me for my first full? Tell me in the comments. Oh, and I almost forgot a special treat. You can save $15 off any half or full RocknRoll race in 2015 using CUPCAKECARDIO in the promo code field. Valid on half or full distance only. Not valid for races in pre-sale pricing. Happy running! rnrpromocode

hello 2015

Happy New Year!

Hello, strangers. I’m really not quite sure where 2014 went. Is it really 2015?!
It’s been a great year.

Last year I wrote this:

In 2014 I’d like to gain muscle and lift heavier, eat cleaner, work on a personal training certification, save more money and pretty much most of the common “resolutions” people have. If I get to travel more that’s definitely an added bonus. I don’t resolve to do any of these things but muscle gain and financial peace are definitely my goals for the year.

I haven’t met all of last year’s goals for 2014 (I prefer that word to resolutions), but I did manage to get a few out of the way.

1. Gain muscle and lift heavier.
While I don’t know how much muscle I gained (if any) because I failed to track that progress, 2014 has been a year of CrossFit gains. I’m lifting a little heavier than I did in 2013 and got a bunch of firsts.
No pull-up yet, but I’m probably proudest of learning to climb a rope.
rope climbAnd getting my wall handstand.
handstand handstand2I’ve been doing wall handstands anywhere I can get them in. Next up? A handstand push-up and maybe finally a pull-up!

2. Eat cleaner.
Nailed it. 2014 has been a great year for healthy recipe exploration. I’ve been headfirst in bread and sweets for the past month, but that’s what January is for right?
Some favorites from the year have been Moroccan chicken casserole, Paleo OMG’s shrimp and jalapeno biscuits and a small broccolini and bacon wrapped asparagus obsession.

3. Travel more. Save more $$$.
While these don’t seem like they go together very well, J and I have worked hard this year to build up a emergency fund. I’ve set up auto-drafts to savings directly from pay so I don’t even miss the money, and we throw everything extra in there as well. Saving money while traveling more has also led me to be extra crafty when trip planning. My love for Priceline’s Name Your Own Price and Southwest’s Rapid Rewards program continues to burn deep. Hyatt Gold Passport and Starwood’s SPG program are following closely behind. We’ve earned a few free hotel stays and three free plane tickets his year for shopping through their portals for everyday purchases. Everyone wins. But mostly we do.

So what’s in store for 2015?
For now, let’s say blog more, see more, do more. I guess time will tell.
